Barbicane,however,lostnotonemomentamidalltheenthusiasmofwhichhehadbecometheobject.Hisfirstcarewastoreassemblehiscolleaguesintheboard-roomoftheGunClub.There,aftersomediscussion,itwasagreedtoconsulttheastronomersregardingtheastronomicalpartoftheenterprise.Theirreplyonceascertained,theycouldthendiscussthemechanicalmeans,andnothingshouldbewantingtoensurethesuccessofthisgreatexperiment.
Anotecouchedinpreciseterms,containingspecialinterrogatories,wasthendrawnupandaddressedtotheObservatoryofCambridgeinMassachusetts.Thiscity,wherethefirstuniversityoftheUnitedStateswasfounded,isjustlycelebratedforitsastronomicalstaff.Therearetobefoundassembledallthemosteminentmenofscience.HereistobeseenatworkthatpowerfultelescopewhichenabledBondtoresolvethenebulaofAndromeda,andClarketodiscoverthesatelliteofSirius.ThiscelebratedinstitutionfullyjustifiedonallpointstheconfidencereposedinitbytheGunClub.So,aftertwodays,thereplysoimpatientlyawaitedwasplacedinthehandsofPresidentBarbicane.
