ItisbutfairtoaddthattheseYankees,braveastheyhaveeverprovedthemselvestobe,didnotconfinethemselvestotheoriesandformulae,butthattheypaidheavily,inpropriapersona,fortheirinventions.Amongthemweretobecountedofficersofallranks,fromlieutenantstogenerals;militarymenofeveryage,fromthosewhowerejustmakingtheirdebutintheprofessionofarmsuptothosewhohadgrownoldinthegun-carriage.Manyhadfoundtheirrestonthefieldofbattlewhosenamesfiguredinthe"BookofHonor"oftheGunClub;andofthosewhomadegoodtheirreturnthegreaterproportionborethemarksoftheirindisputablevalor.Crutches,woodenlegs,artificialarms,steelhooks,caoutchoucjaws,silvercraniums,platinumnoses,werealltobefoundinthecollection;anditwascalculatedbythegreatstatisticianPitcairnthatthroughouttheGunClubtherewasnotquiteonearmbetweenfourpersonsandtwolegsbetweensix.
Nevertheless,thesevaliantartilleriststooknoparticularaccountoftheselittlefacts,andfeltjustlyproudwhenthedespatchesofabattlereturnedthenumberofvictimsatten-foldthequantityofprojectilesexpended.
