Justwhenthedeep-tonedclockinthegreathallstruckeight,Barbicane,asifhehadbeensetinmotionbyaspring,raisedhimselfup.Aprofoundsilenceensued,andthespeaker,inasomewhatemphatictoneofvoice,commencedasfollows:
"Mybrave,colleagues,toolongalreadyaparalyzingpeacehasplungedthemembersoftheGunClubindeplorableinactivity.Afteraperiodofyearsfullofincidentswehavebeencompelledtoabandonourlabors,andtostopshortontheroadofprogress.Idonothesitatetostate,baldly,thatanywarwhichwouldrecallustoarmswouldbewelcome!"(Tremendousapplause!)"Butwar,gentlemen,isimpossibleunderexistingcircumstances;and,howeverwemaydesireit,manyyearsmayelapsebeforeourcannonshallagainthunderinthefieldofbattle.Wemustmakeupourminds,then,toseekinanothertrainofideassomefieldfortheactivitywhichweallpinefor."
