           Sosaying,hecreptintothepantryandlookedabouthimtoseeifhecouldfindsomethingtoappeasehishunger.Hesawagreatvenisonpastyandtworoastedcapons,besidewhichwasaplatterofplover’seggs;moreover,therewasaflaskofsackandoneofcanaryasweetsighttoahungryman.Thesehetookdownfromtheshelvesandplaceduponasideboard,andpreparedtomakehimselfmerry.

           NowtheCook,inthekitchenacrossthecourtyard,heardtheloudtalkingbetweenLittleJohnandtheSteward,andalsotheblowthatLittleJohnstrucktheother,sohecamerunningacrossthecourtandupthestairwaytowheretheSteward’spantrywas,bearinginhishandsthespitwiththeroaststilluponit.MeanwhiletheStewardhadgatheredhiswitsabouthimandrisentohisfeet,sothatwhentheCookcametotheSteward’spantryhesawhimgloweringthroughthebrokendooratLittleJohn,whowasmakingreadyforagoodrepast,asonedogglowersatanotherthathasabone.
