ThenRobinHoodsteppedquicklytothecoversideandcutagoodstaffofgroundoak,straight,withoutnew,andsixfeetinlength,andcamebacktrimmingawaythetenderstemsfromit,whilethestrangerwaitedforhim,leaninguponhisstaff,andwhistlingashegazedroundabout.Robinobservedhimfurtivelyashetrimmedhisstaff,measuringhimfromtoptotoefromoutthecornerofhiseye,andthoughtthathehadneverseenalustierorastouterman.TallwasRobin,buttallerwasthestrangerbyaheadandaneck,forhewassevenfeetinheight.BroadwasRobinacrosstheshoulders,butbroaderwasthestrangerbytwicethebreadthofapalm,whilehemeasuredatleastanellaroundthewaist.

"Marry,thatmeetethmywholeheart!"criedthestranger,twirlinghisstaffabovehishead,betwixthisfingersandthumb,untilitwhistledagain.
