           SoLittleJohncladhimselfallinscarletandstartedofftotheFairatNottinghamTown.

           RightmerryweretheseFairdaysatNottingham,whenthegreenbeforethegreattowngatewasdottedwithboothsstandinginrows,withtentsofmany-coloredcanvas,hungaboutwithstreamersandgarlandsofflowers,andthefolkcamefromallthecountryside,bothgentleandcommon.Insomeboothstherewasdancingtomerrymusic,inothersflowedaleandbeer,andinothersyetagainsweetcakesandbarleysugarweresold;andsportwasgoingoutsidetheboothsalso,wheresomeminstrelsangballadsoftheoldentime,playingasecondupontheharp,orwherethewrestlersstruggledwithoneanotherwithinthesawdustring,butthepeoplegatheredmostofallaroundaraisedplatformwherestoutfellowsplayedatquarterstaff.

           SoLittleJohncametotheFair.Allscarletwerehishoseandjerkin,andscarletwashiscowledcap,withascarletfeatherstuckinthesideofit.Overhisshoulderswasslungastoutbowofyew,andacrosshisbackhungaquiverofgoodroundarrows.Manyturnedtolookaftersuchastout,tallfellow,forhisshoulderswerebroaderbyapalm’s-breadththananythatwerethere,andhestoodaheadtallerthanalltheothermen.
