Now,hadRobinHoodbeenaspeacefulasofold,everythingmighthaveendedinsmoke,asothersuchventureshadalwaysdonebefore;buthehadfoughtforyearsunderKingRichard,andwaschangedfromwhatheusedtobe.Itgalledhispridetothusfleeawaybeforethosesentagainsthim,asachasedfoxfleesfromthehounds;sothusitcameabout,atlast,thatRobinHoodandhisyeomenmetSirWilliamandtheSheriffandtheirmenintheforest,andabloodyfightfollowed.ThefirstmanslaininthatfightwastheSheriffofNottingham,forhefellfromhishorsewithanarrowinhisbrainerehalfascoreofshaftshadbeensped.ManyabettermanthantheSheriffkissedthesodthatday,butatlast,SirWilliamDalebeingwoundedandmostofhismenslain,hewithdrew,beaten,andlefttheforest.
