           NeverawordsaidRobinHood,buthelookedattheforesterswithagrimface;then,turningonhisheel,strodeawayfromthemdowntheforestglade.Buthisheartwasbitterlyangry,forhisbloodwashotandyouthfulandpronetoboil.

           Now,wellwouldithavebeenforhimwhohadfirstspokenhadheleftRobinHoodalone;buthisangerwashot,bothbecausetheyouthhadgottenthebetterofhimandbecauseofthedeepdraughtsofalethathehadbeenquaffing.So,ofasudden,withoutanywarning,hesprangtohisfeet,andseizeduponhisbowandfittedittoashaft."Ay,"criedhe,"andI’llhurrytheeanon."AndhesentthearrowwhistlingafterRobin.

           ItwaswellforRobinHoodthatthatsameforester’sheadwasspinningwithale,orelsehewouldneverhavetakenanotherstep.Asitwas,thearrowwhistledwithinthreeinchesofhishead.Thenheturnedaroundandquicklydrewhisownbow,andsentanarrowbackinreturn.

           "YesaidIwasnoarcher,"criedhealoud,"butsaysonowagain!"

           Theshaftflewstraight;thearcherfellforwardwithacry,andlayonhisfaceupontheground,hisarrowsrattlingabouthimfromoutofhisquiver,thegraygooseshaftwetwithhis;heart’sblood.Then,beforetheotherscouldgathertheirwitsaboutthem,RobinHoodwasgoneintothedepthsofthegreenwood.
