           TheSheriff’smen,seeingtheirmasterthusfleeingforhislife,thoughtthatitwasnottheirbusinesstotarrylonger,so,clappingspurstotheirhorses,theyalsodashedawayafterhim.ButthoughtheSheriffofNottinghamwentfast,hecouldnotoutstripaclothyardarrow.LittleJohntwangedhisbowstringwithashout,andwhentheSheriffdashedinthroughthegatesofNottinghamTownatfullspeed,agraygooseshaftstuckoutbehindhimlikeamoultingsparrowwithonefeatherinitstail.ForamonthafterwardthepoorSheriffcouldsituponnoughtbutthesoftestcushionsthatcouldbegottenforhim.

           ThustheSheriffandascoreofmenranawayfromRobinHoodandLittleJohn;sothatwhenWillStutelyandadozenormoreofstoutyeomenburstfromoutthecovert,theysawnoughtoftheirmaster’senemies,fortheSheriffandhismenwerescurryingawayinthedistance,hiddenwithinacloudofdustlikealittlethunderstorm.

           Thentheyallwentbackintotheforestoncemore,wheretheyfoundthewidow’sthreesons,whorantoLittleJohnandkissedhishands.Butitwouldnotdoforthemtoroamtheforestatlargeanymore;sotheypromisedthat,aftertheyhadgoneandtoldtheirmotheroftheirescape,theywouldcomethatnighttothegreenwoodtree,andthenceforthbecomemenoftheband.
