"So,"quothhe,inagreat,loud,angryvoice,"yehavebeenpoachingupontheKing’sdeer,haveyou?NowIwillmakeshortworkofyouthisday,forIwillhangupallthreeofyouasafarmerwouldhangupthreecrowstoscareothersofthekindfromthefield.OurfaircountyofNottinghamhathbeentoolongabreedingplaceforsuchnaughtyknavesasyeare.Ihaveputupwiththesethingsformanyyears,butnowIwillstampthemoutonceforall,andwithyouIwillbegin."
Thenoneofthepoorfellowsopenedhismouthtospeak,buttheSheriffroaredathiminaloudvoicetobesilent,andbadetherangerstotakethemawaytillhehaddonehiseatingandcouldattendtothemattersconcerningthem.Sothethreepooryouthsweremarchedoutside,wheretheystoodwithbowedheadsanddespairinghearts,tillafterawhiletheSheriffcameforth.
