Ifellonmyforearmsandhead,amongthorns,androsewithatornearandbleedingface.Ihadfallenintoaprecipitousravine,rockyandthorny,fullofahazymistwhichdriftedaboutmeinwisps,andwithanarrowstreamletfromwhichthismistcamemeanderingdownthecentre.Iwasastonishedatthisthinfoginthefullblazeofdaylight;butIhadnotimetostandwonderingthen.Iturnedtomyright,down-stream,hopingtocometotheseainthatdirection,andsohavemywayopentodrownmyself.ItwasonlylaterIfoundthatIhaddroppedmynailedstickinmyfall.
Presentlytheravinegrewnarrowerforaspace,andcarelesslyIsteppedintothestream.Ijumpedoutagainprettyquickly,forthewaterwasalmostboiling.Inoticedtootherewasathinsulphurousscumdriftinguponitscoilingwater.Almostimmediatelycameaturnintheravine,andtheindistinctbluehorizon.Thenearerseawasflashingthesunfromamyriadfacets
