           ThenIstoppedshouting,andsatdownontheheadlandandrestedmychinonmyhandsandstared.Slowly,slowly,theboatdrovepasttowardsthewest.Iwouldhaveswumouttoit,butsomethingacold,vaguefearkeptmeback.Intheafternoonthetidestrandedtheboat,andleftitahundredyardsorsotothewestwardoftheruinsoftheenclosure.Themeninitweredead,hadbeendeadsolongthattheyfelltopieceswhenItiltedtheboatonitssideanddraggedthemout.Onehadashockofredhair,likethecaptainofthe"Ipecacuanha,"andadirtywhitecaplayinthebottomoftheboat.
