Montgomerylayonhisback,withthehairy-greyBeast-mansprawlingacrosshisbody.Thebrutewasdead,butstillgrippingMontgomery’sthroatwithitscurvingclaws.NearbylayM’lingonhisfaceandquitestill,hisneckbittenopenandtheupperpartofthesmashedbrandy-bottleinhishand.Twootherfigureslaynearthefire,—theonemotionless,theothergroaningfitfully,everynowandthenraisingitsheadslowly,thendroppingitagain.
IcaughtholdofthegreymanandpulledhimoffMontgomery’sbody;hisclawsdrewdownthetorncoatreluctantlyasIdraggedhimaway.Montgomerywasdarkinthefaceandscarcelybreathing.Isplashedsea-wateronhisfaceandpillowedhisheadonmyrolled-upcoat.M’lingwasdead.
