Sosoonasthesecondmanhadappeared,Montgomeryhadstartedforward."Steadyonthere!"hecried,inatoneofremonstrance.Acoupleofsailorsappearedontheforecastle.Theblack-facedman,howlinginasingularvoicerolledaboutunderthefeetofthedogs.Nooneattemptedtohelphim.Thebrutesdidtheirbesttoworryhim,buttingtheirmuzzlesathim.Therewasaquickdanceoftheirlithegrey-figuredbodiesovertheclumsy,prostratefigure.Thesailorsforwardshouted,asthoughitwasadmirablesport.Montgomerygaveanangryexclamation,andwentstridingdownthedeck,andIfollowedhim.Theblack-facedmanscrambledupandstaggeredforward,goingandleaningoverthebulwarkbythemainshrouds,whereheremained,pantingandglaringoverhisshoulderatthedogs.Thered-hairedmanlaughedasatisfiedlaugh.
"Lookhere,Captain,"saidMontgomery,withhislispalittleaccentuated,grippingtheelbowsofthered-hairedman,"thiswon’tdo!"
