           ‘Oh,youusethewordinthatsense.Isee,’saidMr.Pickwick.‘Damme!Agentlemanmustexpectreverses,’saidSmangle.‘Whatofthat?HereamIintheFleetPrison.Well;good.Whatthen?I’mnonetheworseforthat,amI?’

           ‘Notabit,’repliedMr.Mivins.Andhewasquiteright;for,sofarfromMr.Smanglebeinganytheworseforit,hewassomethingthebetter,inasmuchastoqualifyhimselffortheplace,hehadattainedgratuitouspossessionofcertainarticlesofjewellery,which,longbeforethat,hadfoundtheirwaytothepawnbroker’s.

           ‘Well;butcome,’saidMr.Smangle;‘thisisdrywork.Let’srinseourmouthswithadropofburntsherry;thelast-comershallstandit,Mivinsshallfetchit,andI’llhelptodrinkit.That’safairandgentlemanlikedivisionoflabour,anyhow.Curseme!’

           Unwillingtohazardanotherquarrel,Mr.Pickwickgladlyassentedtotheproposition,andconsignedthemoneytoMr.Mivins,who,asitwasnearlyeleveno’clock,lostnotimeinrepairingtothecoffee-roomonhiserrand.

           ‘Isay,’whisperedSmangle,themomenthisfriendhadlefttheroom;‘whatdidyougivehim?’

           ‘Halfasovereign,’saidMr.Pickwick.

           ‘He’sadevilishpleasantgentlemanlydog,’saidMr.Smangle;‘infernalpleasant.Idon’tknowanybodymoreso;butHereMr.Smanglestoppedshort,andshookhisheaddubiously.
