           Itwasgettingdark;thatistosay,afewgasjetswerekindledinthisplacewhichwasneverlight,bywayofcomplimenttotheevening,whichhadsetinoutside.Asitwasratherwarm,someofthetenantsofthenumerouslittleroomswhichopenedintothegalleryoneitherhand,hadsettheirdoorsajar.Mr.Pickwickpeepedintothemashepassedalong,withgreatcuriosityandinterest.Here,fourorfivegreathulkingfellows,justvisiblethroughacloudoftobaccosmoke,wereengagedinnoisyandriotousconversationoverhalf-emptiedpotsofbeer,orplayingatall-fourswithaverygreasypackofcards.Intheadjoiningroom,somesolitarytenantmightbeseenporing,bythelightofafeebletallowcandle,overabundleofsoiledandtatteredpapers,yellowwithdustanddroppingtopiecesfromage,writing,forthehundredthtime,somelengthenedstatementofhisgrievances,fortheperusalofsomegreatmanwhoseeyesitwouldneverreach,orwhoseheartitwouldnevertouch.Inathird,aman,withhiswifeandawholecrowdofchildren,mightbeseenmakingupascantybedontheground,oruponafewchairs,fortheyoungeronestopassthenightin.
