           Thepeoplethatattractedhisattentionmost,werethreeorfourmenofshabby-genteelappearance,whotouchedtheirhatstomanyoftheattorneyswhopassed,andseemedtohavesomebusinessthere,thenatureofwhichMr.Pickwickcouldnotdivine.Theywerecurious-lookingfellows.Onewasaslimandratherlamemaninrustyblack,andawhiteneckerchief;anotherwasastout,burlyperson,dressedinthesameapparel,withagreatreddish-blackclothroundhisneck;athirdwasalittleweazen,drunken-lookingbody,withapimplyface.Theywereloiteringabout,withtheirhandsbehindthem,andnowandthenwithananxiouscountenancewhisperedsomethingintheearofsomeofthegentlemenwithpapers,astheyhurriedby.Mr.Pickwickrememberedtohaveveryoftenobservedthemloungingunderthearchwaywhenhehadbeenwalkingpast;andhiscuriositywasquiteexcitedtoknowtowhatbranchoftheprofessionthesedingy-lookingloungerscouldpossiblybelong.
