           ‘Sam,’saidMr.Pickwick,inanangryvoice,ashisattendantmadevariousdemonstrationsofhostilities,‘ifyousayanotherword,oroffertheslightestinterferencewiththisperson,Idischargeyouthatinstant.’

           ‘But,Sir!’saidSam.

           ButthisSamflatlyandpositivelyrefusedtodo;and,afterhehadbeenseverelyreprimandedbyhismaster,theofficer,beinginahurry,condescendedtopickituphimself,ventingagreatvarietyofthreatsagainstSammeanwhile,whichthatgentlemanreceivedwithperfectcomposure,merelyobservingthatifMr.Nambywouldhavethegoodnesstoputhishatonagain,hewouldknockitintothelatterendofnextweek.Mr.Namby,perhapsthinkingthatsuchaprocessmightbeproductiveofinconveniencetohimself,declinedtoofferthetemptation,and,soonafter,calledupSmouch.
