Mr.Wellerregaledhimselfwithmoderationatthenearesttavernuntilitwasnearlydusk,andthenreturnedtothelanewithoutthethoroughfare.HavingbeenadmittedintothegardenbyMary,andhavingreceivedfromthatladysundryadmonitionsconcerningthesafetyofhislimbsandneck,Sammountedintothepear-tree,towaituntilArabellashouldcomeintosight.
Hewaitedsolongwithoutthisanxiously-expectedeventoccurring,thathebegantothinkitwasnotgoingtotakeplaceatall,whenheheardlightfootstepsuponthegravel,andimmediatelyafterwardsbeheldArabellawalkingpensivelydownthegarden.
