           ‘You’rewerygood,sir,’saidSam.‘Whataluckyfelleryouare!’

           ‘Howdoyoumean?’inquiredthegentlemaninblue.

           ‘That‘ereyounglady,’repliedSam.‘Sheknowswot’swot,shedoes.Ah!Isee.’Mr.Wellerclosedoneeye,andshookhisheadfromsidetoside,inamannerwhichwashighlygratifyingtothepersonalvanityofthegentlemaninblue.

           ‘I’mafraidyouracunningfellow,Mr.Weller,’saidthatindividual.

           ‘No,no,’saidSam.‘Ileaveallthat‘eretoyou.It’sagreatdealmoreinyourwaythanmine,asthegen’l’m’nontherightsideo’thegardenvallsaidtothemanonthewrongun,venthemadbullvosa-comin’upthelane.’

           ‘Well,well,Mr.Weller,’saidthegentlemaninblue,‘Ithinkshehasremarkedmyairandmanner,Mr.Weller.’

           ‘Ishouldthinkshecouldn’twerywellbeoffo’that,’saidSam.

           ‘Haveyouanylittlethingofthatkindinhand,sir?’inquiredthefavouredgentlemaninblue,drawingatoothpickfromhiswaistcoatpocket.

           ‘Notexactly,’saidSam.
