Mingledwiththesegroups,werethreeorfourmatch-makingmammas,appearingtobewhollyabsorbedbytheconversationinwhichtheyweretakingpart,butfailingnotfromtimetotimetocastananxioussidelongglanceupontheirdaughters,who,rememberingthematernalinjunctiontomakethebestuseoftheiryouth,hadalreadycommencedincipientflirtationsinthemislayingscarves,puttingongloves,settingdowncups,andsoforth;slightmattersapparently,butwhichmaybeturnedtosurprisinglygoodaccountbyexpertpractitioners.
Loungingnearthedoors,andinremotecorners,werevariousknotsofsillyyoungmen,displayingvariousvarietiesofpuppyismandstupidity;amusingallsensiblepeoplenearthemwiththeirfollyandconceit;andhappilythinkingthemselvestheobjectsofgeneraladmiration—awiseandmercifuldispensationwhichnogoodmanwillquarrelwith.
Andlastly,seatedonsomeofthebackbenches,wheretheyhadalreadytakenuptheirpositionsfortheevening,werediversunmarriedladiespasttheirgrandclimacteric,who,notdancingbecausetherewerenopartnersforthem,andnotplayingcardslesttheyshouldbesetdownasirretrievablysingle,wereinthefavourablesituationofbeingabletoabuseeverybodywithoutreflectingonthemselves.Inshort,theycouldabuseeverybody,becauseeverybodywasthere.
