Atlengththatlowroarofmanyvoicesranthroughthecrowdwhichusuallyannouncesthearrivalofwhatevertheyhavebeenwaitingfor.Alleyeswereturnedinthedirectionofthesally-port.Afewmomentsofeagerexpectation,andcolourswereseenflutteringgailyintheair,armsglistenedbrightlyinthesun,columnaftercolumnpouredontotheplain.Thetroopshaltedandformed;thewordofcommandrangthroughtheline;therewasageneralclashofmusketsasarmswerepresented;andthecommander-in-chief,attendedbyColonelBulderandnumerousofficers,canteredtothefront.Themilitarybandsstruckupaltogether;thehorsesstoodupontwolegseach,canteredbackwards,andwhiskedtheirtailsaboutinalldirections;thedogsbarked,themobscreamed,thetroopsrecovered,andnothingwastobeseenoneitherside,asfarastheeyecouldreach,butalongperspectiveofredcoatsandwhitetrousers,fixedandmotionless.
Mr.Pickwickhadbeensofullyoccupiedinfallingabout,anddisentanglinghimself,miraculously,frombetweenthelegsofhorses,thathehadnotenjoyedsufficientleisuretoobservethescenebeforehim,untilitassumedtheappearancewehavejustdescribed.
