Mr.Pickwickstoodupinastateofgreatagitation,andtookaglanceatthecourt.Therewerealreadyaprettylargesprinklingofspectatorsinthegallery,andanumerousmusterofgentlemeninwigs,inthebarristers’seats,whopresented,asabody,allthatpleasingandextensivevarietyofnoseandwhiskerforwhichtheBarofEnglandissojustlycelebrated.Suchofthegentlemenashadabrieftocarry,carrieditinasconspicuousamanneraspossible,andoccasionallyscratchedtheirnosestherewith,toimpressthefactmorestronglyontheobservationofthespectators.Othergentlemen,whohadnobriefstoshow,carriedundertheirarmsgoodlyoctavos,witharedlabelbehind,andthatunder-done-pie-crust-colouredcover,whichistechnicallyknownas‘lawcalf.’Others,whohadneitherbriefsnorbooks,thrusttheirhandsintotheirpockets,andlookedaswiseastheyconvenientlycould;others,again,movedhereandtherewithgreatrestlessnessandearnestnessofmanner,contenttoawakentherebytheadmirationandastonishmentoftheuninitiatedstrangers.
