Thesesequesterednooksarethepublicofficesofthelegalprofession,wherewritsareissued,judgmentssigned,declarationsfiled,andnumerousotheringeniousmachinesputinmotionforthetortureandtormentofHisMajesty’sliegesubjects,andthecomfortandemolumentofthepractitionersofthelaw.Theyare,forthemostpart,low-roofed,mouldyrooms,whereinnumerablerollsofparchment,whichhavebeenperspiringinsecretforthelastcentury,sendforthanagreeableodour,whichismingledbydaywiththescentofthedry-rot,andbynightwiththevariousexhalationswhicharisefromdampcloaks,festeringumbrellas,andthecoarsesttallowcandles.
Abouthalf-pastseveno’clockintheevening,sometendaysorafortnightafterMr.PickwickandhisfriendsreturnedtoLondon,therehurriedintooneoftheseoffices,anindividualinabrowncoatandbrassbuttons,whoselonghairwasscrupulouslytwistedroundtherimofhisnaplesshat,andwhosesoileddrabtrousersweresotightlystrappedoverhisBlucherboots,thathiskneesthreatenedeverymomenttostartfromtheirconcealment.Heproducedfromhiscoatpocketsalongandnarrowstripofparchment,onwhichthepresidingfunctionaryimpressedanillegibleblackstamp.
