ButMr.Pickwickcarednotforappearancesinsuchanextremecase,andurgedonbySamWeller,hekeptattheverytopofhisspeeduntilhereachedthedoorofManorFarm,whereMr.Tupmanhadarrivedsomefiveminutesbefore,andhadfrightenedtheoldladyintopalpitationsoftheheartbyimpressingherwiththeunalterableconvictionthatthekitchenchimneywasonfire—acalamitywhichalwayspresenteditselfinglowingcolourstotheoldlady’smind,whenanybodyaboutherevincedthesmallestagitation.
Mr.Pickwickpausednotaninstantuntilhewassnuginbed.SamWellerlightedablazingfireintheroom,andtookuphisdinner;abowlofpunchwascarriedupafterwards,andagrandcarouseheldinhonourofhissafety.OldWardlewouldnothearofhisrising,sotheymadethebedthechair,andMr.Pickwickpresided.Asecondandathirdbowlwereorderedin;andwhenMr.Pickwickawokenextmorning,therewasnotasymptomofrheumatismabouthim;whichproves,asMr.BobSawyerveryjustlyobserved,thatthereisnothinglikehotpunchinsuchcases;andthatifeverhotpunchdidfailtoactasapreventive,itwasmerelybecausethepatientfellintothevulgarerrorofnottakingenoughofit.
