‘Atthecloseofoneoftheseparoxysms,whenIhadwithgreatdifficultyheldhimdowninhisbed,hesankintowhatappearedtobeaslumber.Overpoweredwithwatchingandexertion,Ihadclosedmyeyesforafewminutes,whenIfeltaviolentclutchonmyshoulder.Iawokeinstantly.Hehadraisedhimselfup,soastoseathimselfinbed—adreadfulchangehadcomeoverhisface,butconsciousnesshadreturned,forheevidentlyknewme.Thechild,whohadbeenlongsincedisturbedbyhisravings,rosefromitslittlebed,andrantowardsitsfather,screamingwithfright—themotherhastilycaughtitinherarms,lestheshouldinjureitintheviolenceofhisinsanity;but,terrifiedbythealterationofhisfeatures,stoodtransfixedbythebedside.Hegraspedmyshoulderconvulsively,and,strikinghisbreastwiththeotherhand,madeadesperateattempttoarticulate.Itwasunavailing;heextendedhisarmtowardsthem,andmadeanotherviolenteffort.Therewasarattlingnoiseinthethroat—aglareoftheeye—ashortstifledgroan—andhefellback—dead!’
ItwouldaffordusthehighestgratificationtobeenabledtorecordMr.Pickwick’sopinionoftheforegoinganecdote.Wehavelittledoubtthatweshouldhavebeenenabledtopresentittoourreaders,butforamostunfortunateoccurrence.
