Theoldladysubmittedtothispieceofpracticalpolitenesswithallthedignitywhichbefittedsoimportantandseriousasolemnity,buttheyoungerladies,notbeingsothoroughlyimbuedwithasuperstitiousvenerationforthecustom,orimaginingthatthevalueofasaluteisverymuchenhancedifitcostalittletroubletoobtainit,screamedandstruggled,andranintocorners,andthreatenedandremonstrated,anddideverythingbutleavetheroom,untilsomeofthelessadventurousgentlemenwereonthepointofdesisting,whentheyallatoncefoundituselesstoresistanylonger,andsubmittedtobekissedwithagoodgrace.Mr.Winklekissedtheyoungladywiththeblackeyes,andMr.SnodgrasskissedEmily;andMr.Weller,notbeingparticularabouttheformofbeingunderthemistletoe,kissedEmmaandtheotherfemaleservants,justashecaughtthem.Astothepoorrelations,theykissedeverybody,notevenexceptingtheplainerportionsoftheyoungladyvisitors,who,intheirexcessiveconfusion,ranrightunderthemistletoe,assoonasitwashungup,withoutknowingit!Wardlestoodwithhisbacktothefire,surveyingthewholescene,withtheutmostsatisfaction;andthefatboytooktheopportunityofappropriatingtohisownuse,andsummarilydevouring,aparticularlyfinemince-pie,thathadbeencarefullyputby,forsomebodyelse.
