A good-humoured Christmas Chapter, containing an Account of a Wedding, and some other Sports beside:

           Pickwickwasinterruptedbyimmenseapplausefromtheladies,echoedbythegentlemen,duringwhichtheowneroftheeyeswasdistinctlyheardtostatethatshecouldkissthatdearMr.Pickwick.WhereuponMr.Winklegallantlyinquiredifitcouldn’tbedonebydeputy:towhichtheyoungladywiththeblackeyesreplied‘Goaway,’andaccompaniedtherequestwithalookwhichsaidasplainlyasalookcoulddo,‘ifyoucan.’

           ‘Mydearfriends,’resumedMr.Pickwick,‘IamgoingtoproposethehealthofthebrideandbridegroomGodbless’em(cheersandtears).Myyoungfriend,Trundle,Ibelievetobeaveryexcellentandmanlyfellow;andhiswifeIknowtobeaveryamiableandlovelygirl,wellqualifiedtotransfertoanothersphereofactionthehappinesswhichfortwentyyearsshehasdiffusedaroundher,inherfather’shouse.(Here,thefatboyburstforthintostentorianblubberings,andwasledforthbythecoatcollar,byMr.Weller.)Iwish,’addedMr.Pickwick—‘IwishIwasyoungenoughtobehersister’shusband(cheers),but,failingthat,Iamhappytobeoldenoughtobeherfather;for,beingso,IshallnotbesuspectedofanylatentdesignswhenIsay,thatIadmire,esteem,andlovethemboth(cheersandsobs).Thebride’sfather,ourgoodfriendthere,isanobleperson,andIamproudtoknowhim(greatuproar).Heisakind,excellent,independent-spirited,fine-hearted,hospitable,liberalman(enthusiasticshoutsfromthepoorrelations,atalltheadjectives;andespeciallyatthetwolast).
