           Therewereallthefemaleservantsinabrannewuniformofpinkmuslingownswithwhitebowsintheircaps,runningaboutthehouseinastateofexcitementandagitationwhichitwouldbeimpossibletodescribe.Theoldladywasdressedoutinabrocadedgown,whichhadnotseenthelightfortwentyyears,savingandexceptingsuchtruantraysashadstolenthroughthechinksintheboxinwhichithadbeenlaidby,duringthewholetime.Mr.Trundlewasinhighfeatherandspirits,butalittlenervouswithal.Theheartyoldlandlordwastryingtolookverycheerfulandunconcerned,butfailingsignallyintheattempt.Allthegirlswereintearsandwhitemuslin,exceptaselecttwoorthree,whowerebeinghonouredwithaprivateviewofthebrideandbridesmaids,upstairs.AllthePickwickianswereinmostbloomingarray;andtherewasaterrificroaringonthegrassinfrontofthehouse,occasionedbyallthemen,boys,andhobbledehoysattachedtothefarm,eachofwhomhadgotawhitebowinhisbutton-hole,andallofwhomwerecheeringwithmightandmain;beingincitedthereto,andstimulatedthereinbythepreceptandexampleofMr.SamuelWeller,whohadmanagedtobecomemightypopularalready,andwasasmuchathomeasifhehadbeenbornontheland.

           Aweddingisalicensedsubjecttojokeupon,buttherereallyisnogreatjokeinthematterafterall;wespeakmerelyoftheceremony,andbegittobedistinctlyunderstoodthatweindulgeinnohiddensarcasmuponamarriedlife.
