Therewasalowcinderfireinarusty,unfixedgrate;andanoldthree-corneredstainedtable,withsomemedicinebottles,abrokenglass,andafewotherdomesticarticles,wasdrawnoutbeforeit.Alittlechildwassleepingonatemporarybedwhichhadbeenmadeforitonthefloor,andthewomansatonachairbyitsside.Therewereacoupleofshelves,withafewplatesandcupsandsaucers;andapairofstageshoesandacoupleoffoilshungbeneaththem.Withtheexceptionoflittleheapsofragsandbundleswhichhadbeencarelesslythrownintothecornersoftheroom,theseweretheonlythingsintheapartment.
‘Ihadhadtimetonotetheselittleparticulars,andtomarktheheavybreathingandfeverishstartingsofthesickman,beforehewasawareofmypresence.Intherestlessattemptstoprocuresomeeasyresting-placeforhishead,hetossedhishandoutofthebed,anditfellonmine.Hestartedup,andstaredeagerlyinmyface.
