Thewheelsskimoverthehardandfrostyground;andthehorses,burstingintoacanteratasmartcrackofthewhip,stepalongtheroadasiftheloadbehindthem—coach,passengers,cod-fish,oyster-barrels,andall—werebutafeatherattheirheels.Theyhavedescendedagentleslope,andenteruponalevel,ascompactanddryasasolidblockofmarble,twomileslong.Anothercrackofthewhip,andontheyspeed,atasmartgallop,thehorsestossingtheirheadsandrattlingtheharness,asifinexhilarationattherapidityofthemotion;whilethecoachman,holdingwhipandreinsinonehand,takesoffhishatwiththeother,andrestingitonhisknees,pullsouthishandkerchief,andwipeshisforehead,partlybecausehehasahabitofdoingit,andpartlybecauseit’saswelltoshowthepassengershowcoolheis,andwhataneasythingitistodrivefour-in-hand,whenyouhavehadasmuchpracticeashehas.Havingdonethisveryleisurely(otherwisetheeffectwouldbemateriallyimpaired),hereplaceshishandkerchief,pullsonhishat,adjustshisgloves,squareshiselbows,cracksthewhipagain,andontheyspeed,moremerrilythanbefore.Afewsmallhouses,scatteredoneithersideoftheroad,betokentheentrancetosometownorvillage.
