ThemajorpartoftheconversationwasconfinedtoMrs.WellerandthereverendMr.Stiggins;andthetopicsprincipallydescantedon,werethevirtuesoftheshepherd,theworthinessofhisflock,andthehighcrimesandmisdemeanoursofeverybodybeside—dissertationswhichtheelderMr.Welleroccasionallyinterruptedbyhalf-suppressedreferencestoagentlemanofthenameofWalker,andotherrunningcommentariesofthesamekind.
AtlengthMr.Stiggins,withseveralmostindubitablesymptomsofhavingquiteasmuchpine-applerum-and-waterabouthimashecouldcomfortablyaccommodate,tookhishat,andhisleave;andSamwas,immediatelyafterwards,showntobedbyhisfather.Therespectableoldgentlemanwrunghishandfervently,andseemeddisposedtoaddresssomeobservationtohisson;butonMrs.
