Atthefootofaflightofsteps,leadingtothehousedoor,whichwasguardedoneithersidebyanAmericanaloeinagreentub,thesedan-chairstopped.Mr.Pickwickandhisfriendswereconductedintothehall,whence,havingbeenpreviouslyannouncedbyMuzzle,andorderedinbyMr.Nupkins,theywereusheredintotheworshipfulpresenceofthatpublic-spiritedofficer.
Thescenewasanimpressiveone,wellcalculatedtostriketerrortotheheartsofculprits,andtoimpressthemwithanadequateideaofthesternmajestyofthelaw.Infrontofabigbook-case,inabigchair,behindabigtable,andbeforeabigvolume,satMr.Nupkins,lookingafullsizelargerthananyoneofthem,bigastheywere.
