Ifthemiddle-agedladyhadmingledmuchwiththebusyworld,orhadprofitedatallbythemannersandcustomsofthosewhomakethelawsandsetthefashions,shewouldhaveknownthatthissortofferocityisthemostharmlessthinginnature;butasshehadlivedforthemostpartinthecountry,andneverreadtheparliamentarydebates,shewaslittleversedintheseparticularrefinementsofcivilisedlife.Accordingly,whenshehadgainedherbedchamber,boltedherselfin,andbegantomeditateonthesceneshehadjustwitnessed,themostterrificpicturesofslaughteranddestructionpresentedthemselvestoherimagination;amongwhich,afull-lengthportraitofMr.PeterMagnusbornehomebyfourmen,withtheembellishmentofawholebarrelfulofbulletsinhisleftside,wasamongtheveryleast.
