Mr.Pickwick’sorationuponthisoccasion,togetherwiththedebatethereon,isenteredontheTransactionsoftheClub.Bothbearastrongaffinitytothediscussionsofothercelebratedbodies;and,asitisalwaysinterestingtotracearesemblancebetweentheproceedingsofgreatmen,wetransfertheentrytothesepages.
‘Mr.Pickwickobserved(saysthesecretary)thatfamewasdeartotheheartofeveryman.PoeticfamewasdeartotheheartofhisfriendSnodgrass;thefameofconquestwasequallydeartohisfriendTupman;andthedesireofearningfameinthesportsofthefield,theair,andthewaterwasuppermostinthebreastofhisfriendWinkle.He(Mr.Pickwick)wouldnotdenythathewasinfluencedbyhumanpassionsandhumanfeelings(cheers)—possiblybyhumanweaknesses(loudcriesof"No");butthishewouldsay,thatifeverthefireofself-importancebrokeoutinhisbosom,thedesiretobenefitthehumanraceinpreferenceeffectuallyquenchedit.Thepraiseofmankindwashisswing;philanthropywashisinsuranceoffice.(Vehementcheering.
