           Heylingwouldsitwholedaystogether,intheoffice,poringoverthepapersastheyaccumulated,andreadingagainandagain,hiseyesgleamingwithjoy,thelettersofremonstrance,theprayersforalittledelay,therepresentationsofthecertainruininwhichtheoppositepartymustbeinvolved,whichpouredin,assuitaftersuit,andprocessafterprocess,wascommenced.Toallapplicationsforabriefindulgence,therewasbutonereplythemoneymustbepaid.Land,house,furniture,eachinitsturn,wastakenundersomeoneofthenumerousexecutionswhichwereissued;andtheoldmanhimselfwouldhavebeenimmuredinprisonhadhenotescapedthevigilanceoftheofficers,andfled.

           ‘TheimplacableanimosityofHeyling,sofarfrombeingsatiatedbythesuccessofhispersecution,increasedahundredfoldwiththeruinheinflicted.Onbeinginformedoftheoldman’sflight,hisfurywasunbounded.Hegnashedhisteethwithrage,torethehairfromhishead,andassailedwithhorridimprecationsthemenwhohadbeenintrustedwiththewrit.Hewasonlyrestoredtocomparativecalmnessbyrepeatedassurancesofthecertaintyofdiscoveringthefugitive.Agentsweresentinquestofhim,inalldirections;everystratagemthatcouldbeinventedwasresortedto,forthepurposeofdiscoveringhisplaceofretreat;butitwasallinvain.Halfayearhadpassedover,andhewasstillundiscovered.
