           Mr.Pickwickobservedhisvalet’sdirectionsimplicitly,andbiddingSamfollowhim,enteredthetavernhehadpointedout,wherethehotbrandy-and-waterwasspeedilyplacedbeforehim;whileMr.Weller,seatedatarespectfuldistance,thoughatthesametablewithhismaster,wasaccommodatedwithapintofporter.

           Theroomwasoneofaveryhomelydescription,andwasapparentlyundertheespecialpatronageofstage-coachmen;forseveralgentleman,whohadalltheappearanceofbelongingtothatlearnedprofession,weredrinkingandsmokinginthedifferentboxes.Amongthenumberwasonestout,red-faced,elderlyman,inparticular,seatedinanoppositebox,whoattractedMr.Pickwick’sattention.Thestoutmanwassmokingwithgreatvehemence,butbetweeneveryhalf-dozenpuffs,hetookhispipefromhismouth,andlookedfirstatMr.WellerandthenatMr.Pickwick.
