‘Understand,sir!—thatyoucertainlymay,’repliedDodson,withsomethingasnearasmileashisimportancewouldallow.
‘Andthatthedamagesareactuallylaidatfifteenhundredpounds?’saidMr.Pickwick.
‘Towhichunderstandingyoumayaddmyassurance,thatifwecouldhaveprevaileduponourclient,theywouldhavebeenlaidattrebletheamount,sir,’repliedDodson.‘IbelieveMrs.Bardellspeciallysaid,however,’observedFogg,glancingatDodson,‘thatshewouldnotcompromiseforafarthingless.’
‘Unquestionably,’repliedDodsonsternly.Fortheactionwasonlyjustbegun;anditwouldn’thavedonetoletMr.Pickwickcompromiseitthen,evenifhehadbeensodisposed.
‘Asyouoffernoterms,sir,’saidDodson,displayingaslipofparchmentinhisrighthand,andaffectionatelypressingapapercopyofit,onMr.Pickwickwithhisleft,‘Ihadbetterserveyouwithacopyofthiswrit,sir.Hereistheoriginal,sir.’
‘Verywell,gentlemen,verywell,’saidMr.Pickwick,risinginpersonandwrathatthesametime;‘youshallhearfrommysolicitor,gentlemen.’
‘Weshallbeveryhappytodoso,’saidFogg,rubbinghishands.
‘Very,’saidDodson,openingthedoor.
