           Pickwickexpressedastrongdesiretorecollectasongwhichhehadheardinhisinfancy,andtheattemptprovingabortive,soughttostimulatehismemorywithmoreglassesofpunch,whichappearedtohavequiteacontraryeffect;for,fromforgettingthewordsofthesong,hebegantoforgethowtoarticulateanywordsatall;andfinally,afterrisingtohislegstoaddressthecompanyinaneloquentspeech,hefellintothebarrow,andfastasleep,simultaneously.

           Thebaskethavingbeenrepacked,anditbeingfoundperfectlyimpossibletoawakenMr.Pickwickfromhistorpor,somediscussiontookplacewhetheritwouldbebetterforMr.Wellertowheelhismasterbackagain,ortoleavehimwherehewas,untiltheyshouldallbereadytoreturn.Thelattercoursewasatlengthdecidedon;andasthefurtherexpeditionwasnottoexceedanhour’sduration,andasMr.Wellerbeggedveryhardtobeoneoftheparty,itwasdeterminedtoleaveMr.Pickwickasleepinthebarrow,andtocallforhimontheirreturn.Soawaytheywent,leavingMr.Pickwicksnoringmostcomfortablyintheshade.

           ThatMr.Pickwickwouldhavecontinuedtosnoreintheshadeuntilhisfriendscameback,or,indefaultthereof,untiltheshadesofeveninghadfallenonthelandscape,thereappearsnoreasonablecausetodoubt;alwayssupposingthathehadbeensufferedtoremainthereinpeace.ButhewasNOTsufferedtoremainthereinpeace.Andthiswaswhatpreventedhim.
