           Pickwickfromthebarrow,horror-strickenatthelongman’sdarkinsinuations.‘Takeawayhisgun,doyouhear,somebody?’

           Nobody,however,volunteeredtoobeythecommand;andMr.Winkle,afterdartingarebelliousglanceatMr.Pickwick,reloadedhisgun,andproceededonwardswiththerest.

           Wearebound,ontheauthorityofMr.Pickwick,tostate,thatMr.Tupman’smodeofproceedingevincedfarmoreofprudenceanddeliberation,thanthatadoptedbyMr.Winkle.Still,thisbynomeansdetractsfromthegreatauthorityofthelattergentleman,onallmattersconnectedwiththefield;because,asMr.Pickwickbeautifullyobserves,ithassomehoworotherhappened,fromtimeimmemorial,thatmanyofthebestandablestphilosophers,whohavebeenperfectlightsofscienceinmattersoftheory,havebeenwhollyunabletoreducethemtopractice.

           Mr.Tupman’sprocess,likemanyofourmostsublimediscoveries,wasextremelysimple.Withthequicknessandpenetrationofamanofgenius,hehadatonceobservedthatthetwogreatpointstobeattainedwerefirst,todischargehispiecewithoutinjurytohimself,and,secondly,todoso,withoutdangertothebystandersobviously,thebestthingtodo,aftersurmountingthedifficultyoffiringatall,wastoshuthiseyesfirmly,andfireintotheair.

           Ononeoccasion,afterperformingthisfeat,Mr.Tupman,onopeninghiseyes,beheldaplumppartridgeintheactoffalling,wounded,totheground.
