           ‘Ihopeitis,’saidWardle,withashort,drycough.

           ‘Whoeverheardmeaddressherinanywaybutthatinwhichalodgerwouldaddresshislandlady?’continuedMr.Pickwick,withgreatvehemence.‘Whoeversawmewithher?Notevenmyfriendshere—’

           ‘Exceptononeoccasion,’saidMr.Tupman.

           Mr.Pickwickchangedcolour.‘Ah,’saidMr.Wardle.‘Well,that’simportant.Therewasnothingsuspiciousthen,Isuppose?’

           Mr.Tupmanglancedtimidlyathisleader.‘Why,’saidhe,‘therewasnothingsuspicious;butIdon’tknowhowithappened,mindshecertainlywasreclininginhisarms.’

           ‘Graciouspowers!’ejaculatedMr.Pickwick,astherecollectionofthesceneinquestionstruckforciblyuponhim;‘whatadreadfulinstanceoftheforceofcircumstances!Soshewassoshewas.
