           ‘Isitnotawonderfulcircumstance,’saidMr.Pickwick,‘thatweseemdestinedtoenternoman’shousewithoutinvolvinghiminsomedegreeoftrouble?Doesitnot,Iask,bespeaktheindiscretion,or,worsethanthat,theblacknessofheartthatIshouldsayso!ofmyfollowers,that,beneathwhateverrooftheylocate,theydisturbthepeaceofmindandhappinessofsomeconfidingfemale?Isitnot,Isay—’

           Mr.Pickwickwouldinallprobabilityhavegoneonforsometime,hadnottheentranceofSam,withaletter,causedhimtobreakoffinhiseloquentdiscourse.Hepassedhishandkerchiefacrosshisforehead,tookoffhisspectacles,wipedthem,andputthemonagain;andhisvoicehadrecovereditswontedsoftnessoftonewhenhesaid

           ‘Whathaveyouthere,Sam?’

           ‘Calledatthepost-officejustnow,andfoundthishereletter,ashaslaidtherefortwodays,’repliedMr.Weller.‘It’ssealedvithavafer,anddirectedinroundhand.’

           ‘Idon’tknowthishand,’saidMr.Pickwick,openingtheletter.‘Mercyonus!what’sthis?Itmustbeajest;ititcan’tbetrue.’

           ‘What’sthematter?’wasthegeneralinquiry.

           ‘Nobodydead,isthere?’saidWardle,alarmedatthehorrorinMr.
