           ‘Awrittenapology!’repeatedMr.Winkle,inthemostemphatictoneofamazementpossible.

           ‘Ofcourseyouknowthealternative,’repliedthevisitorcoolly.

           ‘Wereyouintrustedwiththismessagetomebyname?’inquiredMr.Winkle,whoseintellectswerehopelesslyconfusedbythisextraordinaryconversation.

           ‘Iwasnotpresentmyself,’repliedthevisitor,‘andinconsequenceofyourfirmrefusaltogiveyourcardtoDoctorSlammer,Iwasdesiredbythatgentlemantoidentifythewearerofaveryuncommoncoatabrightbluedress-coat,withagiltbuttondisplayingabust,andtheletters"P.C."’
