‘Mrs.Pott,letmeentreatyou,mydearma’am,tocomposeyourself,’saidMr.Winkle;buttheshrieksandtappingswerelouder,andmorefrequentthanever.
‘Mydear,’saidMr.Pott,‘I’mverysorry.Ifyouwon’tconsideryourownhealth,considerme,mydear.Weshallhaveacrowdroundthehouse.’ButthemorestrenuouslyMr.Pottentreated,themorevehementlythescreamspouredforth.
Veryfortunately,however,attachedtoMrs.Pott’spersonwasabodyguardofone,ayoungladywhoseostensibleemploymentwastopresideoverhertoilet,butwhorenderedherselfusefulinavarietyofways,andinnonemoresothanintheparticulardepartmentofconstantlyaidingandabettinghermistressineverywishandinclinationopposedtothedesiresoftheunhappyPott.Thescreamsreachedthisyounglady’searsinduecourse,andbroughtherintotheroomwithaspeedwhichthreatenedtoderange,materially,theveryexquisitearrangementofhercapandringlets.
‘Oh,mydear,dearmistress!’exclaimedthebodyguard,kneelingfranticallybythesideoftheprostrateMrs.Pott.‘Oh,mydearmistress,whatisthematter?’
‘Yourmaster—yourbrutalmaster,’murmuredthepatient.
