           Pickwickwasseatedataverysatisfactorydinner;andinthree-quartersMr.WellerreturnedwiththeintelligencethatMr.CharlesFitz–Marshallhadorderedhisprivateroomtoberetainedforhim,untilfurthernotice.Hewasgoingtospendtheeveningatsomeprivatehouseintheneighbourhood,hadorderedthebootstositupuntilhisreturn,andhadtakenhisservantwithhim.

           ‘Now,sir,’arguedMr.Weller,whenhehadconcludedhisreport,‘ifIcangetatalkwiththishereservantinthemornin’,he’lltellmeallhismaster’sconcerns.’

           ‘Howdoyouknowthat?’interposedMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Blessyourheart,sir,servantsalwaysdo,’repliedMr.Weller.

           ‘Oh,ah,Iforgotthat,’saidMr.Pickwick.‘Well.’

           ‘Thenyoucanarrangewhat’sbesttobedone,sir,andwecanactaccordingly.’

           Asitappearedthatthiswasthebestarrangementthatcouldbemade,itwasfinallyagreedupon.Mr.Weller,byhismaster’spermission,retiredtospendtheeveninginhisownway;andwasshortlyafterwardselected,bytheunanimousvoiceoftheassembledcompany,intothetaproomchair,inwhichhonourablepostheacquittedhimselfsomuchtothesatisfactionofthegentlemen-frequenters,thattheirroarsoflaughterandapprobationpenetratedtoMr.Pickwick’sbedroom,andshortenedthetermofhisnaturalrestbyatleastthreehours.
