           ‘"Oh,dear,whatcanitbe?"exclaimedthepoorwidow.

           ‘"Don’tbefrightened,"saidTomSmart.Heslowlydrewforththeletter,andunfoldedit."Youwon’tscream?"saidTomdoubtfully.

           ‘"No,no,"repliedthewidow;"letmeseeit."

           ‘"Youwon’tgofaintingaway,oranyofthatnonsense?"saidTom.

           ‘"No,no,"returnedthewidowhastily.

           ‘"Anddon’trunout,andblowhimup,"saidTom;"becauseI’lldoallthatforyou.Youhadbetternotexertyourself."

           ‘"Well,well,"saidthewidow,"letmeseeit."

           ‘"Iwill,"repliedTomSmart;and,withthesewords,heplacedtheletterinthewidow’shand.

           ‘Gentlemen,Ihaveheardmyunclesay,thatTomSmartsaidthewidow’slamentationswhensheheardthedisclosurewouldhavepiercedaheartofstone.Tomwascertainlyverytender–hearted,buttheypiercedhis,totheverycore.Thewidowrockedherselftoandfro,andwrungherhands.

           ‘"Oh,thedeceptionandvillainyoftheman!"saidthewidow.
