‘ThatthisAssociationcordiallyrecognisestheprincipleofeverymemberoftheCorrespondingSocietydefrayinghisowntravellingexpenses;andthatitseesnoobjectionwhatevertothemembersofthesaidsocietypursuingtheirinquiriesforanylengthoftimetheyplease,uponthesameterms.

Acasualobserver,addsthesecretary,towhosenotesweareindebtedforthefollowingaccount—acasualobservermightpossiblyhaveremarkednothingextraordinaryinthebaldhead,andcircularspectacles,whichwereintentlyturnedtowardshis(thesecretary’s)face,duringthereadingoftheaboveresolutions:tothosewhoknewthatthegiganticbrainofPickwickwasworkingbeneaththatforehead,andthatthebeamingeyesofPickwickweretwinklingbehindthoseglasses,thesightwasindeedaninterestingone.TheresatthemanwhohadtracedtotheirsourcethemightypondsofHampstead,andagitatedthescientificworldwithhisTheoryofTittlebats,ascalmandunmovedasthedeepwatersoftheoneonafrostyday,orasasolitaryspecimenoftheotherintheinmostrecessesofanearthenjar.
