Pickwickhimselfwroteapamphlet,containingninety-sixpagesofverysmallprint,andtwenty-sevendifferentreadingsoftheinscription:thatthreeoldgentlemencutofftheireldestsonswithashillinga-pieceforpresumingtodoubttheantiquityofthefragment;andthatoneenthusiasticindividualcuthimselfoffprematurely,indespairatbeingunabletofathomitsmeaning:thatMr.Pickwickwaselectedanhonorarymemberofseventeennativeandforeignsocieties,formakingthediscovery:thatnoneoftheseventeencouldmakeanythingofit;butthatalltheseventeenagreeditwasveryextraordinary.
