           Ontheentranceofhisfriends,thatgentlemanlaiddownhisknifeandfork,andwithamournfulairadvancedtomeetthem.

           ‘Ididnotexpecttoseeyouhere,’hesaid,ashegraspedMr.Pickwick’shand.‘It’sverykind.’

           ‘Ah!’saidMr.Pickwick,sittingdown,andwipingfromhisforeheadtheperspirationwhichthewalkhadengendered.‘Finishyourdinner,andwalkoutwithme.Iwishtospeaktoyoualone.’

           Mr.Tupmandidashewasdesired;andMr.Pickwickhavingrefreshedhimselfwithacopiousdraughtofale,waitedhisfriend’sleisure.Thedinnerwasquicklydespatched,andtheywalkedouttogether.

           Forhalfanhour,theirformsmighthavebeenseenpacingthechurchyardtoandfro,whileMr.Pickwickwasengagedincombatinghiscompanion’sresolution.Anyrepetitionofhisargumentswouldbeuseless;forwhatlanguagecouldconveytothemthatenergyandforcewhichtheirgreatoriginator’smannercommunicated?WhetherMr.Tupmanwasalreadytiredofretirement,orwhetherhewaswhollyunabletoresisttheeloquentappealwhichwasmadetohim,mattersnot,hedidNOTresistitatlast.
