           Samthrewthepaintedtopsintoacorner,andledthewaythroughadarkpassage,andupawidestaircase.Hepausedattheendofasecondpassage,andheldouthishand.

           ‘Hereitis,’whisperedtheattorney,ashedepositedthemoneyonthehandoftheirguide.

           Themansteppedforwardforafewpaces,followedbythetwofriendsandtheirlegaladviser.Hestoppedatadoor.

           ‘Isthistheroom?’murmuredthelittlegentleman.

           Samnoddedassent.

           OldWardleopenedthedoor;andthewholethreewalkedintotheroomjustasMr.Jingle,whohadthatmomentreturned,hadproducedthelicencetothespinsteraunt.

           Thespinsterutteredaloudshriek,andthrowingherselfintoachair,coveredherfacewithherhands.Mr.Jinglecrumpledupthelicence,andthrustitintohiscoatpocket.Theunwelcomevisitorsadvancedintothemiddleoftheroom.‘Youyouareanicerascal,arn’tyou?’exclaimedWardle,breathlesswithpassion.
